Most of us were handed a specific story about work before we were old enough to question it.

Work is what you build your life around. Work is how you introduce yourself at parties. Work is the measure of whether you’re doing something with your life. And if you’re lucky – if you’re really doing it right – you’ll find work you’re passionate about, and then it won’t feel like work at all.

I spent years trying to live inside that story. And I know a lot of you have too.

This month, we’re examining work differently. Not “how do I find my passion” or “how do I turn what I love into a career” or any of the other questions the internet would love to help you obsess over. Instead: how does work fit into the well-designed life you’ve been building since January? What makes work actually good – not transcendent, not necessarily your calling, just genuinely good? And what do you do with that information once you have it?
